Walking the Talk for the Circular Economy

Although the use of the term Circular Economy is not a new concept there are still many people who have not heard of the phrase or do not know what it means.

Thank you to those of you who contacted me from my flyers who wanted to learn more.  See my blog explaining the Circular Economy for more context.

The Macedon Ranges Shire Council Community Satisfaction Survey demonstrates year after year how important ‘waste management’ is for the residents in our shire and the Circular Economy underpins this.

I am passionate about reducing our impact on the planet and if re-elected I will commit to continuing to learn as much as I can about new and innovative ways to engage the community and businesses with the circular economy as in my opinion, education and leadership are important roles of a Councillor.

Ways I lead by example and have contributed to the Circular Economy include:

  • Participating in the Plastic free July Challenge each year (although I do weigh my soft plastics each month to see how I am going as well).
  • Use my own containers when I purchase take away (thanks Sammy at Sizzler Restobar)
  • Through my Board roles with the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) and Australian Local Government Association (ALGA), I have advocated and assisted with submissions to State and Federal government documents on how State and Federal Government can assist local government, the community and businesses to work better towards a circular economy.
  • Instigated the maximisation of Council’s investment policy by investing with institutions that do not invest in fossil fuels, along with having a mandatory component in Council’s procurement policy about demonstrating environmental sustainability.
