In this blog series on Economic Development, I talk about our natural and open space assets, town planning, local businesses, activities and heritage and how they all intertwine to provide economic benefits to the area.
The way Council plans towns to inform where to put shops, roads, footpaths, housing, advocate for public transport, streetscapes, lighting for safety and so much more also contributes to the economic development of the Shire.

But Council is not the only player.
As mentioned in my article on Retaining our uniqueness while prioritising housing, the State government is in the process of determining housing targets, while also being in charge of the Macedon Ranges Planning Scheme.
However, once Macedon Ranges has been assigned its “target” an important role of Council is to plan for this future though consultation with the community (business and residents), to ensure outcomes are economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.
Ensuring all three aspects of sustainability are considered is not easy, as different segments of the community will have different aspirations, needs and wants.
