The Daylesford to Hanging Rock (Kyneton) Rail Trail

I have always been a strong advocate of the Hanging Rock to Daylesford (and Kyneton) Rail Trail which is a priority project for the Macedon Ranges Shire Council.

The ongoing development of the Rail Trail, in conjunction with Hepburn Shire, is one of the biggest economic development drivers for the Macedon Ranges.

Daylesford Macedon Tourism undertook a study on the economic benefits of the rail trail and determined it could bring in an additional 45,000 visitors per year.

The study suggested that many of these visitors would:

  • Need accommodation
  • Eat at our restaurants and cafes
  • Visit other areas in the region
  • Shop locally for mementoes from their visit

An average additional annual visitor expenditure of $10.9 million was their estimate. Having visited many rail trails in Victoria I can attest that I stay locally, eat locally, and visit the local shops. All while being able to explore and appreciate local agricultural landscapes and the natural environment.

Council itself will not make money from building and maintaining a rail trail, but the flow on effects to the health and well being of local residents, and the economic benefit to local businesses, both existing and potentially new, is an important role Council plays.
