Finding a work life balance as a Councillor

It was great to speak with Chris Eddy on the VLGA Connect Podcast Local Leaders series about how I manage balancing my GP role with my local government career, as well as my approach and contribution to council leadership and the value this brings to the local community.

Being a Councillor takes a minimum of 20 hours most weeks, and often closer to 30 or 40. this is why I can only work part time as a GP.

Around reading council documents and attending Council events I believe it is important to ensure your mental and physical health is maintained through doing non Council related or paid work related activities.

This is why I choose to give back to the community in other ways though volunteering, which gives me great pleasure and an opportunity to meet new people and be more involved in day to day community life.

I try to swim at either the Kyneton Sports and Aquatics centre, or Gisborne Pool, twice a week, and run once a week in preparation for Parkrun on the weekend.

I also try go to a local Barre Classe( like Pilates using a ballet barre) for tone and strength.

Exercise is so important for mental and physical health.

I also enjoy cooking and eating healthily. I have been lucky to attend many of our local cooking schools, including Piper Street Food Co, Cooking with Koji and Red Beard Bakery, which have equipped me with increased skills in the kitchen.

In my spare time I like to garden, which is also very meditative, and beneficial to my health when I am able to produce my own home grown vegetables.
